Miranda July Called Before Congress To Explain Exactly What Her Whole Thing Is
WASHINGTON—Congress convened a special investigative committee this week in an attempt to put to rest questions that have puzzled the nation for much of the past decade, namely what public figure Miranda July’s whole thing is, exactly.
July—of whom many Americans are somewhat aware without being able to articulate what, precisely, she’s driving at—was subpoenaed by the Senate following the release last month of her high-concept independent film The Future, just her second feature in the past seven years. July’s latest cinematic offering, in addition to her myriad other confusing, seemingly unconnected multimedia projects, has reportedly left the nation more perplexed than ever about what it is she’s going for with all this.

Joel Sternfeld @ FOAM

dirtypixel:

Joel Sternfeld held a very interesting talk about his work at the FOAM yesterday. The first time I saw his work was a couple of months ago at the Museum Folkwang in Essen, Germany, I fell in love with his photos right away (I blogged about that). And now Sternfeld signed the book I bought in Germany! Yay! :) There’s a retrospective of his work at the FOAM til march 14 2012.

The vprogids is the well known tv programme guide of the VPRO (originally an acronym for Vrijzinnig Protestantse Radio Omroep, or “Liberal Protestant Radio Broadcasting Company”) in the Netherlands. It was established in the Netherlands in 1926 as a religious broadcasting organization. Falling under the Protestant pillar, it represented the Liberal Protestant current. However, in the 1950s and 1960s it became more (social) liberal than protestant. Nowadays I condsider them on the left side of the political spectrum with a critical view on society. VPRO is the stubborn one among the Dutch broadcasters, purposefully choosing those programmes and topics that the other broadcasting companies pass over.

I picked some covers from Piet Schreuder’s Flickr, there’s lots more over there! Enjoy!

VERGOGNA! by Hélène Zünd

VERGOGNA!

Vergogna! is a book documenting the waste issue in Campania, Italy. Campania, which is well-known for its landscapes and food culture, has also been under international scrutiny for being the site of an “urgent” waste disposal problem. Reoccurring images of garbage mountains in Naples were presented in newspapers, while the surrounding countryside was virtually ignored by media. It was in the fields and farms of this countryside that local mafia dumped tons of toxic waste. Vergogna! is a story which begins with images of the abandoned landscapes, and then reveals the personal voices of Campania. The book concludes with statistics that reveal the region’s environmental and health impacts.
